Popcorn stitches aren’t just fun to work with, they also give your crocheted project a fun and playful look with a bubbly texture.

A popcorn stitch consists of 5 double crochets made in the same stitch that come together to create the popcorn stitch, making this stitch a lot less complicated to crochet than it looks.

How to crochet the popcorn stitch

  1. Do 5 double crochets (dc) in the same stitch.
  2. Pull on the loop on your hook to make it nice and long, and remove your hook.
  3. Count the stitches and reinsert your hook into the first of the five double crochets you just made.
  4. Catch the long loop with your hook and tighten the yarn.
  5. Pull the (once) long loop through the other loop on your hook.
  6. And now you have your first popcorn stitch!

Psst! Learn how to do the double crochet here.

Tip! Popcorn stitches use more yarn than typical stitches, so make sure that you have enough yarn for your popcorn project.

Are you left-handed?

In the video below, we will show you how to crochet the popcorn stitch if you prefer to hold the crochet hook in your left hand.
