Invisible increases are amazing and practical since they - as the name suggests - are almost invisible and won’t leave holes in your work.

Increasing (inc) is a knitting technique that you will encounter quite often. The technique lets you add extra stitches to your work, and it’s a must-know technique that you’ll find in all kinds of knitting patterns.

In the video above, we illustrate how to knit a left-slanting increase (M1L).

Increase: How to

  1. Knit to the point where you want to make your left-slanting increase.
  2. Pick up the bar between the two stitches with your left needle, going in from front to back.
  3. Knit through the back loop to twist it.

Tip! Having trouble picking up the bar between the stitches? A quick fix is to pick up the bar with your right needle and then sliding it over to the left needle.

Congratulations! You have now made your first invisible increase and, thus, added a new stitch to your work.
